{"id":11432,"date":"2020-03-14T10:43:06","date_gmt":"2020-03-14T14:43:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iupac.org\/?page_id=11432"},"modified":"2023-10-03T13:08:14","modified_gmt":"2023-10-03T17:08:14","slug":"solubility-data-series","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/databases\/solubility-data-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Solubility Data Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page-content\">\n<p>In the mid-1970s a group of chemists and chemical engineers came together within IUPAC to exhaustively compile and critically evaluate reports of experimental measurements of solubility primary chemical literature.\u00a0\u00a0Beginning with Volume 1 covering the solubility of helium and neon in 1979 work has continued dealing with a wide array of solubilities of gases, liquids and solids in binary, ternary and higher order systems.\u00a0\u00a0By 2017 a total of\u00a0104 volumes\u00a0had been published and more are in preparation.\u00a0\u00a0Volumes 1-65 were published as hard bound monographs, first by Pergamon Press (volumes 1\u201353) and later by Oxford University Press (volumes 54\u201365).\u00a0\u00a0Starting with Volume 66 the series has been published by the\u00a0<em>Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data<\/em>\u00a0in cooperation with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology and is now formally known as the IUPAC-NIST Solubility Data Series.\u00a0\u00a0For journal publication some volumes have been divided into parts bringing the total number of publications to 136.\u00a0\u00a0A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/publications.iupac.org\/ci\/2004\/2603\/4_clever.html\">history<\/a>\u00a0of the early work on the SDS was prepared by Professor Larry Clever, one of the original participants (<em>Chem Int<\/em>\u00a02004, 24(3), p. 12;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1515\/ci.2004.26.3.12\">doi:10.1515\/ci.2004.26.3.12<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0A guide to the preparation and use of the SDS (<em>PAC<\/em>\u00a02010, 82(5), pp. 1137-1159;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1351\/PAC-REP-09-10-33\">doi:10.1351\/PAC-REP-09-10-33<\/a>) and a glossary of solubility terms (<em>PAC<\/em>\u00a02008, 80(2), pp. 233\u2013276;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1351\/pac200880020233\">doi:10.1351\/pac200880020233<\/a>) have been published.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal of the SDS from the start was to compile all experimental solubility data in the world\u2019s reviewed chemistry literature and to critically evaluate this body of data using international teams of experts under the auspices of IUPAC.\u00a0\u00a0It was estimated that the effort would require the production of about 100 volumes each treating a chemically related group of systems.\u00a0\u00a0In 2016 that estimate has been exceeded and the end is not yet in sight.\u00a0\u00a0Some early volumes have already been revised and updated to include new experimental measurements and to incorporate new approaches to critical evaluation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the first volume of the SDS was published in 1979 great advances have occurred in the electronic storage and search for chemical property values including solubility.\u00a0\u00a0While the SDS continues to be published on paper, all volumes are also accessible electronically.\u00a0\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/srdata.nist.gov\/solubility\/\">IUPAC-NIST Solubility Database<\/a> provides search capability for selected systems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The SDS is an ongoing work.\u00a0 Expressions of interest from qualified individuals interested in volume preparation as well as questions about the series and its use should be directed to the Editor-in-Chief, Mark Salomon &lt;<a href=\"mailto:markinnj@comcast.net\">markinnj@comcast.net<\/a>&gt;.<\/p>\n<h2>Published Volumes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Volume 1: H.L.
