{"id":11457,"date":"2020-03-31T02:26:15","date_gmt":"2020-03-31T06:26:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iupac.org\/?p=11457"},"modified":"2020-09-24T17:11:44","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T21:11:44","slug":"winners-of-the-2020-iupac-solvay-international-award-for-young-chemists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iupac.org\/winners-of-the-2020-iupac-solvay-international-award-for-young-chemists\/","title":{"rendered":"Winners of the 2020 IUPAC-Solvay International Award for Young Chemists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4876 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Troph\u00e9eSolvayPrize-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Troph\u00e9eSolvayPrize-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/iupac.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Troph\u00e9eSolvayPrize.jpg 509w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and Solvay announce the winners of the 2020 IUPAC-Solvay International Award for Young Chemists, presented for the best Ph.D. theses in the chemical sciences, as described in 1000-word essays.<\/p>\n<p>The five winners are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/muhammad-jbara-0b1755110\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Muhammad Jbara<\/a> (Israel), Ph.D., Technion Israel Institute of Technology<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6945-4057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hung VanThanh Nguyen<\/a> (Vietnam), Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ronshah013\/\">Ron Shah<\/a> (Canada), Ph.D., University of Ottawa<\/li>\n<li>Namrata Singh (India), Ph.D., Indian Institute of Science<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8616-5452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Qi Zhang<\/a> (China), Ph.D., East China University of Science and Technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The winners will each receive a cash prize of USD 1000 and travel expenses to the <a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/event\/iupac-world-chemistry-congress-2021-montreal\/\">48th IUPAC World Chemistry Congress<\/a>, 13-20 August 2021, in Montr\u00e9al, Canada.\u00a0 Each winner will also be invited to present a poster at the IUPAC Congress describing his\/her award-winning work and to submit a short critical review on aspects of his\/her research topic, to be published in <a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/journals\/pure-and-applied-chemistry\/\"><em>Pure and Applied Chemistry<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 The awards will be presented to the winners of the 2020 and 2021 competitions during the Opening Ceremony of the Congress.<\/p>\n<p>The titles of the winners\u2019 theses are:<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Muhammad Jbara: &#8220;Chemical Protein Synthesis of Modified Histone Proteins for Biochemical Studies&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Hung VanThanh Nguyen: &#8220;Bottlebrush and Related Polymer Architectures for Biomedical Applications&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ron Shah: &#8220;Autoxidation and Its Inhibition In Both Industrial and Biological Contexts: New Molecules, Methods &amp; Mechanisms&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Namrata Singh: &#8220;Development of Nanomaterials as Antioxidant Enzyme Mimetics for Cellular Redox Homeostasis&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Qi Zhang: &#8220;Controlled Self-Assembly of Nanoparticles Enabled by Macrocyclic Host-Guest Chemistry and Their Functional Exploitation&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There were 50 applications from individuals receiving their Ph.D. degrees from institutions in 18 countries.\u00a0 The award selection committee, chaired by Professor Qi-Feng Zhou, IUPAC Past President, comprised members of the IUPAC Bureau and a senior science advisor from Solvay, all of whom have a wide range of experience in chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>In view of the many high-quality applications, the Committee also decided to award three Honorable Mentions to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aisha N.
