Established in 2000 to encourage outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers, the IUPAC-SOLVAY International Award for Young Chemists is presented to outstanding Ph.D. theses in the general area of the chemical sciences, as described in a 1000-word essay.<\/h2>\n

In 2022 and 2023 IUPAC-SOLVAY awarded up to five prizes. Each prize will consist of USD 1,000 cash award and up to USD 1,000 towards travel expenses to attend the 2023 IUPAC Congress in The Hague<\/a>\u00a0(18-25 Aug 2023; see\u00a0iupac2023.org<\/a>) where the awards will be presented. In keeping with IUPAC\u2019s and Solvay’s status as global organizations, efforts will be made to ensure fair geographic distribution of prizes.<\/p>\n

Due to exceptional circumstances, the presentation at the 2023 IUPAC Congress will include the 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 awardees. Each awardee will be invited to present a poster on his\/her research and to participate in a plenary award session, and is expected to submit a review article for publication in Pure and Applied Chemistry<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Since its inception, the Award has been presented to more than 100 young scientists (up to 108 in 2021) having earned degrees in more than twenty different countries, and now holding academic, government, and industrial positions in chemistry and related sciences and engineering all over the world. First established as the IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists in 2000, it was renamed in 2014 when Solvay began its sponsorship of the award.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis [award] came at a turning point in my career when it was not easy to be taken seriously as an Australian female chemist, and gave me the boost I needed to stay in science. I am sure it also later helped me to make the jump from being a postdoc to a faculty member.\u201d Michelle L. Coote<\/a> an 2001 Awardee<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAt first I felt that the IUPAC International Award for Young Chemists was only a recognition to my PhD work. The perfect crown for this intensive period. Obviously, this encouraged me to move on with a Humboldt post-doc, a Liebig junior group leader fellowship, and many others until my current position. Now I know that this award had a bigger dimension. It was the first real trust of my colleagues on me as a promising researcher.
