{"id":418,"date":"2015-09-16T09:15:54","date_gmt":"2015-09-16T13:15:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theeiupac.wpengine.com\/what-we-do"},"modified":"2024-07-17T05:58:15","modified_gmt":"2024-07-17T09:58:15","slug":"what-we-do","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/","title":{"rendered":"What We Do"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is the world authority on chemical <a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/nomenclature\">nomenclature,<\/a>\u00a0terminology (including the naming of new elements in the <a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/periodic-table-of-elements\/\">periodic table<\/a>),\u00a0 standardized methods for measurement, atomic weights and many other critically-evaluated data.\u00a0\u00a0It develops and maintains <a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/recommendations\/\">Recommendations<\/a>\u00a0that create a common language for the global chemistry community. The scientific work of IUPAC is conducted largely through a formal <a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/projects\">Project System<\/a>\u00a0in which proposals from chemists around the world are peer-reviewed and, if meritorious, are approved and supported. In addition, IUPAC has many other wide-ranging activities that ultimately impact both the chemical profession and the worldwide community as a whole. These include the publishing of <a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/technical-reports\">technical reports<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/journals\">journals<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/books\/\">books,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/databases\">databases<\/a>\u00a0and other information <a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/resources\/\">resources<\/a> that facilitate\u00a0the conduct of scientific research,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/conferences\">conferences<\/a>, and the provision of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/awards\">awards<\/a>\u00a0for the recognition of scientific excellence. IUPAC is also involved in joint projects with other organizations; one of which is the\u00a0Joint Committee for Guides in Metrology\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/what-we-do\/jcgm\/\">JCGM<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>With the increasing focus on open science and FAIR data, IUPAC is focusing effort toward the development of digital standards for chemistry.\u00a0 Led by members of the IUPAC Committee on Publications and Chemical Data Standards (<a href=\"https:\/\/iupac.org\/body\/024\">CPCDS<\/a>), chemists and data scientists must translate existing chemical standards into the digital space, to support the chemistry community.
