The Procedure for Publication of IUPAC Technical Reports and Recommendations, and IUPAC-Sponsored Books has been prepared by ICTNS<\/strong>\u00a0and published in\u00a0<\/em>PAC: \u201cPreparation, formatting and review of IUPAC Technical Reports and Recommendations, IUPAC-sponsored books, or other items carrying the IUPAC label\u201d\u00a0Pure and Applied Chemistry, vol. 94, no. 11-12, 2022, pp. 1257-1267.\u00a0https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1515\/pac-2022-1106<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

IUPAC Recommendations<\/strong>\u00a0are the output of IUPAC Projects<\/a> or other studies\u00a0\u00a0on nomenclature, symbols, terminology, or conventions, and their purpose is to recommend \u00a0unambiguous, uniform, and consistent nomenclature and terminology for specific scientific fields, usually presented as:\u00a0glossaries of terms for specific chemical disciplines;\u00a0definitions of terms relating to a group of properties;\u00a0nomenclature of chemical compounds and their classes;\u00a0terminology, symbols, and units in a specific field;\u00a0classifications and uses of terms in a specific field; and\u00a0conventions and standards of practice for presenting data in a specific field. The development of IUPAC Recommendations as well as that of IUPAC Technical\u00a0Reports<\/a>\u00a0is conducted in a manner to ensure that\u00a0the widest possible consensus has been reached among all IUPAC Divisions and other bodies of the Union, \u00a0between IUPAC and other bodies of the International Council for Science (ICSU), the international standardizing organizations, and the Conf\u00e9rence G\u00e9n\u00e9rale des Poids et Mesures (CGPM) and its Committees. \u00a0The IUPAC Inter-divisional Committee on Terminology, Nomenclature and Symbols (ICTNS<\/a>) coordinates the standardization activities and the \u00a0output of such activities are released as Provisional Recommendations<\/a>\u00a0for public review and commentary.\u00a0\u00a0Following approval, the Final Recommendations are published in IUPAC\u2019s journal Pure and Applied Chemistry<\/a><\/em> (PAC<\/em>) or books<\/a>, including the so-called Color Books<\/a><\/em>. The basics of organic nomenclature, of\u00a0inorganic nomenclature\u00a0and\u00a0polymer nomenclature are also summarized in a collection of Brief Guides<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

IUPAC Technical Reports<\/strong> are scientific publications resulting from IUPAC\u00a0Projects<\/a>\u00a0or other research activities related to: the\u00a0compilation and critical evaluations of data, or of parameters and equations; the\u00a0critical assessment of methods and techniques;\u00a0guidelines for the presentation of methods of analysis or for the calibration of instruments;\u00a0determinations of specific elements or compounds in selected samples in special environments;\u00a0studies of the biodegradability of materials;\u00a0chemical process control aspects; and\u00a0evaluations of properties of specific materials.\u00a0The manuscripts are reviewed by the IUPAC International Committee on Terminology, Nomenclature and Symbols (ICTNS<\/a>) \u00a0for consistency of nomenclature and symbols usage with current IUPAC standards. Once a manuscript has been approved, it is \u00a0published in IUPAC\u2019s journal,\u00a0Pure and Applied Chemistry<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(PAC<\/em>). These reports are freely-available in the year following their publication.<\/p>\n
